Satbir Virdee is a Finance Analyst for Get Living London, who joined initially on a contract in mid 2016 before taking up a permanent role in January 2017.
What was your career before you joined Get Living London?
I worked as a Finance Analyst for Harry Ramsden which is known for its famous fish and chips. It was a very exciting and challenging role as I was involved in capturing daily sales across the various sites in the UK. This was crucial, as senior members of staff required this information to understand store trading performance. I was involved in creating reports not only to help monitor the company’s growth but also to see whether the purchase of new sites would aid in this development. The food industry is always exciting and challenging as customer’s tastes are always changing.
What made you want to come and work in the property industry and how do you think skills in your former career have helped you in this role?
The property industry has always inspired me because of the huge developments that I see so much of now in the UK. It’s an industry that is growing rapidly and with this continuous growth it is vital to cater for various residents that are coming from all parts of the world either to work or live. I wanted to work for an industry that would allow me to gain a wide range of experiences, work in a dynamic environment and also be given the opportunity to work within a diverse group of people. Get Living is always looking to expand its portfolio within the rental sector and striving to provide high-quality accommodation to all its residents, and being part of this is a great learning curve for me.
The skills I acquired from my previous role have helped me greatly, especially coming to another sector that I have not worked in before. Having come from a retail finance background I had a range of skills from creating sales reports, understanding variances to liaising with numerous stakeholders. This has allowed me to apply the knowledge within the property sector to help develop and enhance my skills. I enjoy my current role as it enables me to help make decisions which will have a positive impact on both our business and residents in the long term as well as the short term. The main benefit is that the knowledge gained can be directly applied to your job to deal with many everyday situations. It has certainly allowed me to become more commercially aware whilst applying this to my studies.
